Cassian Voss: Minor Key and the Unresolved Chord

Cassian Voss records solo piano in Edinburgh, working in minor keys with unresolved suspensions and room tone.

1 min read

Cassian Voss plays upright piano in an Edinburgh flat at two in the morning, with the window open and the street below. His songs never leave the home key—the tension lives in the not-moving.

The suspended fourth

“Minor Key” ends on an unresolved major seventh. “The tension lives within the not-moving,” Voss says. “The bus at 0:22 evolves, but the chord does not.”

Room tone as instrument

Recorded on one microphone above middle C, with the piano lid open. The room itself became an instrument, and that is what they did.

Passing bus as percussion

Street noise stayed inside the track. The passing bus at 0:22 became part of the arrangement, a minor-key ballet.
