Mira Vale: Folk Between Cornwall and Seattle

Mira Vale writes folk ballads between Cornwall and Seattle. Song stories, album notes and credits behind her music.

1 min read

Mira Vale splits her time between a cottage on the Cornish coast and a rain-soaked apartment in Seattle. Her songs are written at dawn, with the gulls already arguing over tide scraps, and recorded with the window open to let the salt air in.

Coastal light on the stone wall

“Coastal Light” was written at 5:40 a.m., before the town woke. The chorus arrived complete—“the world belongs to the shore”—and Vale recorded it in one take with a single microphone.

The second verse gulls

The gulls in “Coastal Light” are not sound effects. They were outside the window during the recording, and Vale kept them in the mix. “They’re part of the song,” she says.
