The Quiet Statues: Church Acoustics in Glasgow

The Quiet Statues record in a Glasgow church, mixing post-punk rhythms with strings and hushed vocals.

1 min read

The Quiet Statues record in one room under Glasgow stone. No artificial reverb—the church already has too much. Their sound mixes post-punk rhythms with strings, hushed vocals and the echo of three seconds.

One room, one take, live

“Stone Arches” was tracked live in a converted church. The singer’s voice returns three seconds later, changed but still able to give. “We refused to add artificial reverb,” the group says. “The room did the work.”

Bell cord and radiator

The string sound at the end of “Bell Cord” is the actual church bell cord, tied to a radiator in the basement, pulled once. The silence after is dense.

Hand claps and foot stomps

Recorded in the nave where echoes live. The Clyde Archive sessions captured everything—room tone, street noise, the building itself.
