Recording at Home on a Budget: The $500 Studio

Recording at home on a budget—the $500 studio setup from Naveen Dhillon and The Blue Moss. One mic, one interface, one room.

1 min read

Naveen Dhillon records in a Mohali bedroom with a battery-powered synth and a borrowed interface. The Blue Moss recorded “Salt and Wood” with one ribbon microphone in a barn. You do not need a commercial studio.

The essential gear

  • One microphone (ribbon or dynamic)
  • One audio interface
  • A laptop with any DAW
  • A room with good light and minimal noise

The room matters more than the gear

A barn, a closet full of coats, a converted flat—these are choices, not compromises. The space shapes the sound more than the equipment.

Record during the limitations

Dhillon recorded “Power Cut” during an actual blackout. The neighbor’s dog joined in. He kept it. Limitations become the arrangement.
