Celeste Noir writes torch songs carried by funeral brass. Her bridge on “Second Line” is a trumpet line improvised in one take, kept exactly as played.

Brass in the hallway

When rain moved a wedding indoors, the brass section played from the hallway. “Hallway brass and torch song,” Noir calls it.

One take, no fixes

The trumpet on “Second Line” was improvised and never edited. “We kept it exactly as played,” she says.
