The Difference Between Mixing and Mastering

The difference between mixing and mastering explained—levels and balance vs final polish and loudness.

1 min read

Mixing balances individual tracks. Mastering polishes the final stereo file. Both are essential, but they are not the same.

Mixing

Adjusting levels, panning, EQ, and compression for each instrument and vocal. The goal is clarity and separation.

Mastering

Applying subtle EQ, compression, and limiting to the final mix. The goal is loudness and consistency across playback systems.

Why you need both

A great mix can be ruined by bad mastering. A great master cannot save a bad mix.

DIY vs professional

Start by learning mixing yourself. Consider hiring a mastering engineer for the final polish.
