How to Record Vocals in a Bedroom Studio

How to record vocals in a bedroom studio—mic placement, budget room treatment, noise floor, multiple takes.

1 min read

Cassian Voss recorded “Minor Key” at 2 a.m. in an Edinburgh flat with the window open. No vocal booth, no treated room—just one microphone above middle C.

Mic placement

Six to twelve inches from the mouth. Slightly off-axis to reduce plosives.

Room treatment on a budget

Hang blankets behind you. Record in a closet full of coats. The clothes absorb reflections.

Turn off everything

Fans, AC, refrigerators—anything that hums. Record silence for 30 seconds to check noise floor.

Multiple takes

Record three to five takes. Comp the best phrases from each.
